This weekend, the main topic of discussions at Hedonism Hotels will be motivational hedonism. Some of you might be new to this topic, so let me explain it briefly below..
What is motivational hedonism?
Motivational hedonism is said to be the ‘most significant form of psychological hedonism’. Already during the 18th century, Jeremy Bentham was having discussions with his friend about only pleasure got any value and pain is the one and only that stands for disvalue.
From his book ‘An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation’ we find the following quotation: “Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain, and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do’. (Bentham 1789).
Among the other contributors to Motivational Hedonism we find Plato, Mill and More.
What is pleasure?
Can pleasure be both fun and dangerous for your body and mind at the same time? Let us discuss around commonly used drugs such as ecstacy and their place in this topic.
What is pain?
Pain can be taken to include unpleasant feelings, such as irritations, anxiety and depression. Let us discuss around depression and the nature of this state - is depression really a form of pain?
Hedonism Hotels meeting, 4th of April
Make sure to prepare a few questions to Henrik and come along, motivated and happy as always. A few australian exchange students will also join in this weekend - so lets hope they are motivated to discuss motivational hedonism.
